Based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, working face-to-face but also offering online for those who prefer it or are further afield, I am a fully qualified integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor, meaning that I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches (person-centred, psychodynamic and relational) to suit your needs and unique situation.
Integrative counselling is a holistic, flexible approach to therapy that looks at the whole person, considering your mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional needs (see my approach for more information). The client-counsellor relationship is key to successful therapy. Therapy can be challenging. Hence, I aim to build a trusting and non-judgmental relationship that helps you feel comfortable, safe and secure. In this setting, you can explore and come to understand your life history, behaviours, difficulties, concerns, or triggers. From this, you can begin to heal, make positive adjustments and set goals to improve your health, happiness, relationships, and satisfaction with life.
I work with 18+ adults and have experience working with addiction, abuse, anger, anxiety, bereavement and loss (recent and past), depression, gender and identity issues, mental health and physical health issues, maternal issues (esp. ambivalence, post-natal depression), men’s issues (incl. toxic masculinity, male post-natal depression), OCD, relationships, trauma (incl. PTSD and CPTSD), self-esteem, sex and sexuality issues, work issues, women’s issues.
I have a background in academia, and I completed my doctorate in English Literature and Psychoanalysis at the University of Birmingham in 2016. I am a published author and write regularly on psychoanalysis and counselling and psychotherapeutic theory and practice.
I am a fully insured and a supervised, registered member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and adhere to their ethical framework (read more here) to ensure good practice. I am committed to upholding high levels of personal and professional moral qualities. The BACP is a membership organisation and a registered charity that sets standards for therapeutic practice and provides information for therapists, clients of therapy, and the general public. You can find more details at www.bacp.co.uk
The contents of the sessions are confidential. However, I do share anonymised details with my counselling supervisor with whom I meet regularly. Supervision ensures that I work safely, ethically and effectively and that I am meeting your needs. The only time that I may need to break confidentiality is if I believe that you or a third party is at risk of harm. I will speak with you about this beforehand.
I maintain my professional status by engaging in continual professional development (CPD) activities to help update and improve my practice.
If there are any instances when I do not think that I have the training or experience to help, or if I do not think that I am the right fit for you, then I will endeavour to signpost you to other professionals.
